ARTIST'S STATEMENT

I’ve been drawing and painting, mostly in oils, for thirty years.

I struggled to learn how to draw accurately, only to realize that I don't care much about naturalism. I found that color, the connections among shapes, and texture are what interest me.

My subjects are not exotic — generally Vermont and other landscapes. The motif is simply a starting point. The real subject of my painting is the surface of the picture, the paint itself.

I believe that when you make a painting, the unconscious logic of your being shapes the result. I hope to record not only a place in the landscape, but also my deepest response to that scene.

My favorite paintings evolved in ways I could not have anticipated.

I am fascinated by color. Apollinaire claimed that "color is the fruit of life," and that pretty much says it for me.
